Tax Bracket Calculator
See your marginal tax bracket (the rate on your next dollar) next to your overall effective tax rate.
This is a US federal income tax estimate for education, not tax advice. It uses the standard brackets in and does not include credits, the alternative minimum tax, or state income tax. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Marginal vs. effective rate
Your marginal rate is the tax rate on your next dollar of income, the bracket your income currently sits in. It is not the rate applied to your whole income: the US uses a progressive system, so only the income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate. Your effective rate is your total federal tax divided by your taxable income, which blends together every bracket you passed through and is usually noticeably lower than your marginal rate.
Frequently asked questions
Does moving into a higher bracket lower my take-home pay?
No. Only the income above the bracket threshold is taxed at the higher rate; income below that threshold keeps being taxed at the lower rates it always was.
What counts as taxable income?
Generally your income after above-the-line deductions and either the standard deduction or itemized deductions, whichever you use. Enter that final number here, not your gross income.
